If you’ve read my website, you know that I LOVE nature, and somewhere near the top of my list “what I love about nature” is “rocks”. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved collecting rocks. I still collect rocks to this day… from simple ordinary rocks that just catch my eye to beautiful gemstones and crystals that I buy. For me, rocks are often calming and soothing, and I’m drawn to different stones on different days, just as I’m drawn to different essential oils on different days, just as I’m drawn to different foods on different days. My attraction to rocks began to make more sense when I started my holistic wellness journey and began learning about the energies and healing properties of certain stones and crystals. But just like most things “new agey,” I was concerned that using crystals to help with my mood and with my healing was straying away from my Christian beliefs and morals, so I began to research where (or if) crystals/gemstones fit into a Christian lifestyle.
It doesn’t take long to find mention of crystals/jewels/stones in the Bible. In Exodus, the Isrealites wore breastplates adorned with precious stones. In Revelation, the new Jerusalem has a light clearer than a crystal. Throughout the Bible crystals and gemstones are stones of value… being placed in buildings, sacrificed as offerings, and given as gifts.
Now you say, “I get that, but how can a Christian use a stone for healing? That’s not in the Bible.” Well, not specifically. However, there is great meaning in the twelve stones in Aaron’s breastplate… stones of protection, wisdom, healing, clarity, etc. Each of the twelve stones has a specific property and meaning. Furthermore, Genesis is pretty clear that God created Heaven and Earth, and all that He created was very good. God created Man to have dominion over Earth. His creation contains everything man needs to survive, including resources for healing. Just the same way people use herbs and essential oils from plants for wellness, crystals and stones have healing properties and can be used for wellness.
Where most Christians get hung up is that in the New Age practices, people often use their stones in an idolatry type situation. They worship the stones. This is definitely not Christian use of said stones, just the same as worshiping money is not Christian. Even though most people love money and want to have plenty of it, we know that we must be good stewards of our money and use it according to God’s purpose. It’s the same with crystals… if when using your crystals, you recognize that the stones are yet another form of healing modality that God created and placed on this Earth for us, and you are not worshipping the crystals, then you’re in alignment with using them in an Christian manner. As a Christian, you don’t worship your fruits and veggies and herbs that are healing to our bodies. In the same sense, don’t worship your crystals. Use the crystals for healing and give all recognition and glory to God who created these wonderful, beautiful, powerful stones.
